A Day in the Hive

Shrink down to bee size and help a honeybee on her busy day.

Story words

ZAP—we shrank to bee size, and Buzzy’s busy world suddenly felt enormous! We met the little honeybee with a big job: gathering food from flowers to bring back to her hive. “Stay close!” said Buzzy, ready for a day of buzzing work. Could we keep up with our speedy new friend?

WHOOSH—off went Buzzy, hopping from flower to flower while we followed her busy journey! She sipped sweet nectar, and golden pollen clung to the fuzzy hairs on her legs. “Lots to gather!” she buzzed, because the hive needed food, and every flower stop meant more work. But could that dusty pollen do another important job?

That pollen had somewhere important to go: another flower of the same kind! As Buzzy visited, some rubbed off onto flowers, helping them make seeds and fruit—but it had to reach the right place. “Every visit matters!” Buzzy buzzed, helping plants such as apples, berries, and pumpkins. With her flower work done, what waited back at the hive?

BZZZZ—back at the hive, thousands of bees were working together, and Buzzy had brought her flower food home! “We did it!” she buzzed, one little worker in an enormous team. There was the honeycomb, with little six-sided cells called hexagons, where bees can store food. Mission accomplished—but what sweet surprise did Buzzy have for us?

Buzzy gave us a tiny drop of honey—a sweet thank-you after her busy day. “Thank you, Buzzy!” we said, delighted by our little taste of the hive’s treasure. Then ZAP—we grew back to normal size, smiling at the thought of our tiny friend. We were big again, but little Buzzy had a big place in our hearts.
