Story words

George Washington grew up on a Virginia farm, where he learned at home and helped with farm life. The famous story that he chopped down a cherry tree? That was made up later!

Those careful writing skills had a practical cousin: at 16, Washington worked as a land surveyor, measuring Virginia’s fields and forests. Surveyors used long measuring chains—giant rulers that would be a nightmare to fit in a pencil case!

Farm life meant learning to care for animals, too. Washington later became a famously skilled horseman—this horse looks like it’s checking his brushing technique!
