The Lantern Fox

A little fox with a glowing tail helps lost fireflies find their way home.

Story words

When the moon rose over Whispering Woods, a tiny fox woke with something extraordinary—her tail was glowing! WHOOSH went the soft night breeze as Pip stretched, her fluffy tail shining like a warm little lantern. “Hello, nighttime,” she whispered, peeking into the shadows. But who might need her light tonight?

Beside the stream—splish, splash—a group of tiny fireflies blinked in the darkness, far from where they belonged. “We can’t find home,” they told Pip, their little lights too dim to show the way. They blinked and blinked, but the woods stayed dark around them. How could such tiny travelers ever find their way back?

Pip lifted her glowing tail high, making a bright little beacon above the ferns. “Follow me,” she said, and the fireflies floated after her as the leaves whispered swish, swish. Beyond that warm circle of light, the woods were still dark, and home was still somewhere ahead. Would Pip’s lantern tail lead them all the way?

Then, at last—the giant oak, full of tiny firefly homes, rose before them! “We made it,” cried Pip, and oh, what a wonderful sight that tree was after the dark woods. Real fireflies use flashes of light to communicate with one another, turning little blinks into signals. What would these fireflies say with their lights?

All at once, the whole oak lit up—a glorious, twinkling thank-you just for Pip! “You’re welcome, little friends,” she murmured, curling beneath their sparkling glow while the leaves whispered hush, hush. Her tail had helped them home, and now their light shone softly over her. Pip closed her eyes, wrapped in the warmth of kindness shining back.
