Nimbus the Tiny Dragon

Nimbus can't breathe fire. He sneezes bubbles instead, and that turns out to be amazing.

Story words

High in the mountains lived a tiny dragon with a very big problem: whenever Nimbus tried to breathe fire, something completely unexpected came out. “Here goes!” he said, scrunching up his little nose. AH-CHOO—out floated bubbles instead of flames, shimmery, wobbly, and not one bit fiery. What would the big dragons think?

WHOOSH—the big dragons blew mighty flames, and Nimbus wished with all his little dragon heart that he could do that, too. “Why can’t I be like them?” he whispered. His bubbles suddenly seemed much too silly beside all that blazing fire. But what if those mighty flames landed somewhere they shouldn’t?

Then—FIZZ—a spark landed in the dry grass, and a small fire began near the dragon village. Dry grass catches fire easily, and these flames could spread. “The village!” cried Nimbus, his bubble-making nose suddenly feeling much too small for such a frightening problem. How could a tiny dragon possibly stop this?

Nimbus took a deep breath—the deepest his tiny dragon chest could hold. “Come on, bubbles!” he cried, and AH-CHOO—out burst his biggest bubble storm ever. Splish, splash, POP—his watery dragon bubbles burst over the fire until every last flame was out! Nimbus had done it—but what would the big dragons say now?

“Hooray for Nimbus!” the dragons cheered, their happy voices booming through the mountains. Nimbus felt warm inside as he whispered, “My bubbles helped!” He hadn’t blown a single flame, yet his splish-splash sneeze had stopped the fire and kept their village safe. Nimbus didn’t need to be another dragon—being Nimbus was wonderful.
