The Umbrella-Hat Glider

A rainy-day invention that turns into something that can fly.

Story words

SPLISH—could Leo’s soggy walk to school be the start of something that could fly? Rain kept making his walks miserable, and holding an umbrella meant one hand was always busy. “What if my umbrella were a hat?” he wondered, imagining dry shoulders and two free hands. A wonderfully wobbly idea—but could he make it work?

Leo built a bright umbrella hat, with a chin strap to hold it in place. PITTER-PATTER went the rain above him, while underneath he stayed dry, with both hands gloriously free. “Puddle-jumping time!” he cheered, turning a soggy walk into a splishy celebration. His rainy-day problem seemed solved—but what would happen when the wind joined in?

WHOOSH—a big gust caught the umbrella hat and lifted Leo right off his toes! “Whoa, I didn’t plan that!” he cried, suddenly discovering that keeping dry wasn’t his biggest problem anymore. Wind pushing against the umbrella’s wide underside could push it upward, too. His invention could catch the air—but how could Leo control where it went?

Leo gave his surprising invention fabric wings and a tail to help it steer, turning his umbrella hat into the Umbrella-Hat Glider. “Now for version two!” he declared, ready to discover what his changes could do. SWISH—this was no longer just about keeping raindrops away. Could those wings turn one wild surprise into a smooth glide?

From the top of a gentle hill, Leo glided down toward the soft field, his Umbrella-Hat Glider carrying him through the air. WHOOSH—down he sailed, until he landed safely on the grass. “I did it!” he cheered: his rainy-day problem had become a flying adventure. And that soggy little idea had given Leo a big new reason to believe in himself.
