Zip and Zap

Twin robots learn that two different ideas can make one great plan.

Story words

WHOOSH—meet Zip and Zap, two robot twins about to face a problem neither can solve alone! “I’m super fast,” says Zip, ready to zoom. “I’m super strong,” says Zap, who likes to do the heavy lifting. But when a big job needs both their skills, will these two have one great idea—or twice the trouble?

BEEP-BEEP—there’s a bridge-sized problem in town! The town is building a bridge for the science fair, but the very last beam is stuck across the river. “We need that beam,” says Zip, and Zap agrees. Without it, the bridge cannot be finished—so how will the twins get this big job done?

“I’ll zoom around for help,” says Zip, certain that speed is the answer. “I’ll lift it myself,” says Zap, certain that strength will do it. Back and forth they argue, faster and louder, but all that talk doesn’t move the beam one tiny bit. The bridge is still unfinished—what if neither twin will listen?

Then comes the idea that changes everything: “You lift, I’ll bolt,” says Zip. Zap lifts the beam while Zip zooms the bolts into place—WHIR, CLICK, CLICK—as those fasteners join the bridge parts together. Engineers work in teams, too, combining different skills to solve problems. Their two ideas are finally working together—but will they finish the bridge?

TA-DA—the bridge is finished in record time, ready for the science fair! “We did it,” say Zip and Zap, and this time the twins agree completely. Zip’s speed and Zap’s strength weren’t competing anymore; two different ideas had become one great plan. They didn’t have to be the same to build something wonderful together.
